Omfed is now in a position to accelerate the production of Omfed products, due to the intervention of the State Government of Odisha

Of late, the State Government of Odisha had sanctioned the establishment of a fully automated dairy processing plant in Choudwar in Cuttack district, which is approximated at Rs.285 crore, in order to accelerate the milk production of Omfed. As such the milk processing capacity of Omfed will be enhanced from the current five lakhs litres per day (LLPD) to 12 lakhs litres per day (LLPD). This project has been authorized on 20th May, 2015, by the High power committee of the Government which was chaired by the Development Commissioner, U N Behera.

On November, 2015, in order to gratify the growing needs of milk and the Omfed products of the consumers, the Chief Minister of Orissa, Naveen Patnaik, had counselled the intensification of Omfed through a new plant. The new plant was framed by the Indian Dairy Machinery, a subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board Delhi, which was presented as the detailed project report by the Chairman of Omfed, Bishnupada Sethi . According to the words of Sethi, who is also the Principal Secretary of the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Department ,a master plan has been set up by the Omfed for increasing the milk procurement from 5.5 LLPD to 10 LLPD; instantaneously the fluid milk marketing will be enhanced from the existing 5 LLPD to 12 LLPD.

As the focus is based on the shift from the actual 2.8 lakh members to five lakh members, the Omfed has been working hard towards  the enrolment of more farmer members into the dairy cooperatives, which will be raised from 5, 553 to 7, 000 dairy cooperatives.

So, Omfed will be in a position to market more milk and manufacture other Omfed products like the curd, ghee, flavoured and paneer.

Omfed on part of supporting its expansion endeavours had managed to mobilise funds from various sources. Lately, the Omfed has received an Rs.48 crore grant from the Ministry of Tribal Affairs.

Omfed Products

A short while ago, Omfed has planned to sell the surplus milk outside Orissa, due to the lack of the capacity for the dairy processing  plant to process the milk which is being procured daily. The Omfed which has been procuring 5.20 lakhs litres of milk per day from the dairies located across the 13 plants in the state is having a surplus of approximately, 30, 000 litres of milk per day. So the unprocessed volume will either reach beyond its shelf life or jack up the operational cost in order to maintain its quality.

Half of the proposed 30, 000 litres will be sold and the milk requirement for the processing of the Omfed products like curd, rasogolla, flavoured milk and peda  will be thereby assessed  as such. It has been told by the General Manager of the Omfed, Basant Mishra that after the assessment they will definitely be able to ascertain the exact quantity for selling.

It has been planned that the milk capacity of the Bhubaneswar plant will be increased from 1.75 lakh litres per day to 2.75 lakh litres per day besides having a ground plan to set up a dairy processing plant having a capacity of 5 lakh litres a day in Cuttack. For the issue of widening their network of marketing network, new retailers will be appointed and advertisements will soon be given out.

For the purpose of reaching the supply of milk and the Omfed products by the Omfed to the doorstep of the customers and bulk producers, online system will be introduced for taking orders. Moreover, for exhausting the surplus milk, opening of 24×7 milk parlours will be there.

In a word, it can be concluded that the State Government of Odisha had sanctioned the establishment of a fully automated dairy processing plant in Choudwar in Cuttack district, which is approximated at Rs.285 crore, in order to accelerate the production of milk and Omfed products.
