After Independence, India, which has been persisting to be deficit in its milk production had ultimately driven the government to launch the famous ‘Operation Flood’ program in the past. This program was implemented thereupon in three phases, altogether with three objectives. Those objectives included increase in milk production, augmentation of rural incomes and fair price for the consumers. As a result of this initiative, India now stands out to be as both self sustained and marginal exporter in its milk production.

Right now, more than 80-90 million dairy farmers, being also engaged in other kinds of farming view this dairy farming as their secondary source of income.

The total milk production of India is 140 million tones and 55% of it is marketable surplus after self consumption. The last few years have shown an accelerating demand for processed milk and dairy products due to the changing income and consumption pattern. By the time of 2021-22, the demand for milk is predicted to touch 180 million tones. For the purpose of maintaining equity in the milk production with the rising demand, the National Dairy Development Board had launched the National dairy Plan in 2012 which will be focusing in the growth in production and fix up the producers for a greater access to the organized milk processing sector.

As the dependency for the small and the marginal dairy farmers continue to exist, there is a prerequisite for the propulsion of certain ideas like herd aggregation, scientific cattle management, deployment of mechanization and improving the quality of cattle breed.

The Private sector companies alone can fetch the long term goals by research and development. The private companies and the cooperatives can serve the objective of educating the dairy farmers and also advising them on scientific cattle management. It is a matter of concern that India needs to have a stronger and resilient rural economy, altogether with higher income level.

Summary-In a word, it may be concluded that, due to the initiative of the operation flood program in the past, India now stands out to be as both self sustained and marginal exporter in its milk production. Right now, more than 80-90 million dairy farmers, being also engaged in other kinds of farming view this dairy farming as their secondary source of income. The total milk production of India is 140 million tones and 55% of it is marketable surplus after self consumption.
