Panchmahals-based Panchamrut Dairy’s chief Jetha Bharwad is likely to become the first vice chairman of the powerful Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF).

For the first time in its history, GCMMF – the apex marketing body of all the district dairy unions of Gujarat that markets brand Amul, has created a separate post of vice chairman by bringing a changing in its bye-laws.

Election for the post will be held on Tuesday when Bharwad, whos is also the BJP MLA from Shehra, is expected to get elected unopposed.

Earlier, in August, when election for GCMMF’s chairmanship were held, TOI had reported about the possibility of Bharwad taking over as vice chairman.

Chairman’s election had split Gujarat’s flourishing dairy sector in two camps with Bharwad staking his claim for the post with the support of chairmen of dairy unions mainly from Saurashtra.

His attempts were however thwarted by chairmen of three largest dairy unions of Gujarat including Sabar Dairy’s chief Jetha Patel, Banas Dairy’s then chief Parthi Bhatol and Amul Dairy’s chief Ramsinh Parmar.

After Bharwad had started lobbying for the top post, the trio had even threatened to force upon an election in GCMMF – which since its inception in 1973 has always elected a chairman unanimously.
