Recently, two dairy owners based on the rural parts of the Ahmednagar and the Pune districts respectively were charged with a penalty of Rs.60, 000 each by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the guilt of delivering sub-standard milk to their patrons. After conducting the laboratory tests, the samples of milk from the above mentioned dairies were not up to the mark. This was the aftermath of the surprise drive being conducted by the FDA at the Pune division on June 17 from diversified dairies which were operational within the administration jurisdiction of the FDA. The substandard milk was reported to be sold at places like Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
According to a report presented by the FDA this year ,a total of 1,754 samples were drawn from the Maharashtra region between the time period of April, 2014 and March,2015, but bewilderingly, 330 samples belonged to the status of low quality and 94 samples was known to be hazardous for consumption as such. The proclaimed public health laboratories had examined the samples which primarily belonged to the milk collection centres, tankers, processing units, local vendors and local dairies. As such these devious suppliers were filed with criminal cases by the Officials. Previously with the implementation of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, a case would be filed in a court of law against the dairy owner or supplier if the milk sample belonging to the dairy did not confirmed to the set norms.
As such it has been aforementioned by a senior official of the FDA that as of now they had filed 39 criminal cases where the samples were found to be unsafe. It has been revealed by a senior official of FDA belonging to the headquarters in Mumbai that the substandard samples all together have fetched Rs.25.78 lakh in 148 cases. With the advent of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the FDA officials in now in a position to impose a fine for the case of adulteration to the dairy owner or a supplier as a matter of greater issue.
