Milk federation uses jackfruit to make a sweet even as demand soars
Be it promoting tourism or products such as ‘neera’ or jackfruit, Kerala is far ahead of Karnataka. Adding another first to its cap, the Central Products Dairy, of the Malabar Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union, which comes under the Kerala Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (MILMA) has launched a unique product called Milki-Jack. Milki-jack is the first by product of jackfruit probably launched by any cooperative in India.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror about the product, Radhakrishnan S, manager, Central Products Dairy, Beypore, North Kozhikode, Kerala, said, Milki-Jack is a milk dessicated product made out of milk, jackfruit pulp, sugar and added dried coconut chips. This product has been introduced into the market of Malabar region, covering six northern districts like Kasargod, Kannur, Wayanad, Palakkad, Kozhikode and Malappuram. Now, the product is also available in the southern districts of Kerala. This is the one and only product made at this dairy for the entire Kerala market to be sold through Milma network.
This product is priced at Rs 50 for a 150-gram pack size in a plastic tub. This tub contains 7 to 8 pieces of milki-jack. He said, “Being a dairy technologist, I always wanted to do something innovative. After a lot of lab trials, the product was ready by December and on January 1, we introduced it to the market. In the first two days, we managed to sell 400 tubs and the demand is only growing. The sale has been 5,300 tubs up to January 18. We have been receiving a lot of queries about the product. This is one way to revive jackfruit, which the new generation is not very fond of. There is nothing artificial in the product.”
There is a renewed interest in Kerala and Karnataka in this product. Shree Padre, editor of Adike Patrike, a Kannada agricultural magazine, said, “With this product, the jackfruit potential is being made known to the world. This product will also help boost the impression people have about jackfruit. It will help people understand that many such products can be invented and be made available round the year.”
