Get milk cheaper from dairy farmers at weekend bazaar

Thane: Around 50 dairy farmers from western Maharashtra including Sangli and Kolhapur latched on to the weekly direct to consumer concept in Thane on Saturday. Around 800 litres of milk was brought for sale at the weekly mart at Gaondevi from Kolhapur and was immediately sold out as the product was cheaper by Rs 5 per litre as compared to market rates.

“We are doing away with the need of a middlemen, and the farmers are working on forming a milk cooperative movement akin to the one in Gujarat. The dairy produce will be sourced directly from farmers, treated and then sold to consumers every week at the Gaondevi market under the aegis of the Swabhimani Shetkari group.

This will ensure farmers get their due profit and consumers get milk at reasonable rates,” said a farmer, who participated in the initiative.

Meanwhile, there are plans to introduce food grains along with non-vegetarian products like fish and chicken meat for sale at the bazaars. Hundreds of residents, who flocked to the market, were surprised by the milk quality and reasonable pricing. Uttam Barbole, a coordinator of the event said they have received an encouraging response from the residents today and will definitely work towards ensuring their presence over the weekend bazaars.
