Agriculture and farming tradition in Dakshina kannada has continued to be successful because of co-operative sector except for Mangaluru taluk, which shows the tendency of becoming a concrete jungle,
Speaking after inaugurating the function organised by Dakshina Kannada Milk Union Limited, Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP said, that the life of farmers are well supported, by the KMF. Out of 14 Unions in the state, Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Union only has grown because of its ability adopt to excellent system.

SCDCC Bank has given loans to farmers as much as they required and at the right time. Thereby the farmers are able to pay back the loan and live a secured life, he said.

Campco is another co-operative which has supported farmers in Dakshina Kannada by giving good rate for their yields, because of which the have become more creative in their approach. From growing paddy they have taken to arecanut and then to rubber and depending on the market price for their yield. So, the farmers, have the adaptability to change to situation and make their life more secure. He said farmers in Dakshina Kannada don’t go to the extent of suicide.

He said, every taluk must get a processing plant to preserve the food produced and a warehouse to make use of farmers produce to the best. A proposal has been sent to the union government in this regard, he said.

Dr. B.M.Hedge, on this occasion released plain butter milk of one litre sachet. While speaking after releasing the churned butter milk, Dr, Hedge said, grow a cow at home and feed it with green only, and taste the milk produced it. The milk and products of such cows when consumed soothes the human system.

Satyanarayana, Head of the marketing of DKMUL said that this the second time plain butter milk is release to the market and, this time he was sure that people even in bar and restaurant will demand for the same and consume it. In the market, various taste of butter milk is available and good plain butter milk is not available. The present design of the curds packet will be replace soon and also with better quality of curds, he said

Dakshina Kannada Co-op. Milk Producers’ Union is a ISO 22000 : 2005 certified organisation having jurisdic­tion of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi coastal Districts. It is one of the leading Milk Unions in the State of Karnataka. At the time of registration during the year 1986, the Union’s milk procurement was 4,500 KPD. Now the Union is pro­curing 3,35,742 KPD through 671 Dairy Co-operative Societies. In the beginning , Union was procuring 80% of its requirement of milk from neighbouring/other Milk Unions of Karnataka Milk Federation and now the Union is at threshold of becoming self reliant by increasing local milk procurement.

The Union has 671 functioning Dairy Co-op. Societies. The Union has established 179 Women Dairy Co-op. Societies in its jurisdiction, out of which 154 WDCS are under STEP Programme of Government of India.
The MPCS are having 119774 farmer members out of which 33290 are women.

72No.s Bulk Milk Coolers are functioning in union jurisdiction. Further Mangalore Dairy is having facilities for production of Ghee, Mysore Pak, Peda, Lassi, Kova, Flavoured Milk, Paneer, Bite, Burfi, Curds etc.
